Situation

As per a recent observation, a large number of patients from the North-East travel to Mumbai, Chennai, and Vellore seeking treatment for Cancer care due to non-availability of a comprehensive Cancer Centre in the North-Eastern States.

Reports suggested that in CMC Vellore, 25% patients are from NE.

Similarly, leading Hospitals in Chennai were seeing almost 30% of their patients come from North East.

To address this scenario, the Chief Minister of Assam, requested the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) that the Dr. B Barooah Cancer Center be taken over by Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai.

Tata Trusts entrusted the job to evaluate BBCI to recommend the interventions required to transform the Hospital to a comprehensive Cancer care Center and to estimate the financial outlay.

Intervention

Formed a multi-functional team consisting of clinicians, medical equipment specialists, and others

In-depth review of the existing skill set at BBCI versus the needs

Recommended the additions for medical equipment and the costs

Recommended the CAPEX to be incurred for the building

Recommended the additional human resources to deliver quality care and meet standards

Audited the operational compliances

Recommend the overall Transformation Plan

Impact / Outcome

The union cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi approved the takeover of BCCI, Guwahati, Assam by TMC , where TMC would have administrative control of the BBCI that continually served the needs of cancer patients in the North East of India.

Expected financial outlay is approximately 450 crores.
